Streaming Network Video Players

Choosing a home video streaming set top
box player can be a complicated process. There are lots of
things to consider. Are you going to be playing videos directly
from the web or from your home pc, or from a network hard drive
NAS.
You also need to decide whether you can lay a cable to hook
the player with a network Ethernet cable or whether you have to
use it wirelessly.
Is gaming important, if so you can take advantage of
consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, both of
which are very good network video players.
Is a DVD drive important. Some video streaming network video
players have a DVD drive built in.
So there are a lot of options to consider and there is no
device that does it all.
Wireless VS Wired
Ok so having your video streaming set top box wireless is
cool and very convenient.
If you want to stream video in HD forget it. Very few boxes can
do this and it wont wotk all the time. Even the Apple TV box
with it’s draft-n Wi-Fi can’t even stream a HD quicktime movie
trailer. That was using a draft-n Wi-Fi router just 10 meters
away!!!
Only the Xbox seems to play HD ok playing a full WM-HD clip
flawlessly. Most other players seem to play fine for a few
seconds then start to stutter and pause or go jerky all the way
through. So if you want HD you have to use a good old fashioned
cable. However there is a workaround.

If you can’t use a cable you could use a pair of Home Plug
adapters and use your mains wiring instead of running a long
network cable. Plug one adapter in to a spare mains wall socket
near your router and plug the other one in near your set top
box.
They come in two different speeds so make shore you get the
85mb/sec HomePlugs that will be fast enough for HD.
Alternatively you could just buy a network video player that
has a USB socket on it so you can just plug a hard drive or pen
drive in and away you go.
File Formats
Not all video streaming players play all files formats. DivX
and Xvid which are the most conmen video formats on the web
wont play on Apple TV. Most other video streaming players will
play these formats but might not play Quicktime. So you need to
work out what’s important for you.
Practical Considerations
When choosing a player try to match the audio video
connections to that of your TV and hi-fi. HDMI is the best
choice since it is HD and digital and carries audio and video
in one lead. If your TV is older the best choice is component
but you will need to connect the audio separately. Most older
TV’s only have scart sockets which carry audio and video. The
video signal can be set for RGB on some TV’s this will give the
best picture. This needs to be set ion the player menu and the
TV’s menu.
Do you mind a device that has a fan or a
hard drive wering away inside it. Some players such as the Xbox
have fans which in a quiet room can be annoying.
